Make a Holiday Photo Frame

To make a great holiday-themed photo frame, you’ll need the following materials:

*magnetic tape or a strip of magnet
* a ruler
*pencil
*a piece of cardboard (maybe the side of a cereal box)
*scissors
*white glue
*a disposable water dish
*paint brush
*scraps of holiday wrapping paper and cards
*newspaper

1.) Take your cardboard, pencil and ruler and measure 7 inches down the side of your cardboard. Mark the beginning and the end. Use your ruler and draw a line from one mark to another.

2.) From the top of your marked 7 inches, measure 5 inches across the top of your cardboard. Mark the end of the 5 inches. Draw a straight line connecting the beginning and end of your 5 inches.

3.) From the end of the 5 inches you just marked, measure down 7 inches and mark it. Draw a line from the beginning of that 7 inches to its end (this should give you three sides of a rectangle).

4.) Now use your ruler and draw a straight line from the end of the 7 inch line to the beginning of the first 7 inch line.

5.) With adult supervision, use your scissors and carefully cut on the lines you’ve just drawn (this will give you a 7 inch by 5 inch rectangle).

6.) Now take your ruler and measure in 1 inch from your rectangle’s outer edge at two different spots. Mark each place you measure to and draw a set of four connecting lines. This should give you a rectangle inside of your rectangle. With adult supervision and help, cut the inside rectangle out by following your lines.

7.) You now have a basic cardboard frame—Now’s the fun part! Take your scraps of holiday wrapping paper or holiday cards and tear or cut them into pieces approximately longer and wider than an inch, but smaller than about three inches. Once you have a good selection of scraps in pieces, take out your paintbrush, glue, newspaper and disposable water dish.

8.) Put your newspaper over your work surface to protect it. Put some white glue into the dish and put about the same amount of water in on top of it. Use the brush to mix the water and glue together. Carefully spread some of the watered down glue on part of your frame’s front. Use the brush to pick up a piece of your scrap paper and stick it to the glue on the frame. Use the brush (and sometimes your fingers) to smooth out the paper.

9.) Add a little more of the glue mixture and another piece of paper, overlapping pieces to create a collage effect. Continue gluing, overlapping paper and smoothing the pieces out until the entire front of your frame is covered. Wash out your brush and dish with a little soap and water.

10.) Set your frame aside and let it dry.

11.) After the frame’s front has dried, take your magnets and attach them to the back of the frame, close to the edge of the inside rectangle you cut.

12.) Finally, mix a little glue and water together (1 part glue to 3 parts water) and use it to glaze over the entire front of your frame.

Now you have a holiday photo frame you can put over photos on your fridge to spread the holiday spirit!
