Easy Christmas Construction Paper Mosaic

Mosaics have been made from clay tiles and glass for centuries. The Romans were known for making amazing and complex mosaics that adorned the floors of palaces and houses alike. One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to make a mosaic is with glue, scissors and shapes cut out of construction paper.What you’ll need to make a paper mosaic is:

* glue
* old newspaper
* scissors
* a printout of our Christmas mosaic design (click here to print it)
* different colors of construction paper cut into small squares and triangles

Gather your materials together and put some old newspaper down to protect your work surface.

Look at your printout and think about the colors of construction paper you’ll need for:
Rudolph’s body, Rudolph’s belly, Rudolph’s harness, Rudolph’s antlers, Rudolph’s hooves, the sky, moon, stars, letters and cloud.

With adult supervision, carefully cut small squares and triangles out of the construction paper colors you selected, stacking them neatly on your newspaper.

Now start with the upper left hand corner of the printout and fill in the colors of the design, going all the way across the paper gluing squares or triangles in neat, straight rows.

Don’t worry about making the squares fit into the design exactly—part of the charm of a mosaic is that the designs are more geometric than normal. After you’ve gone all the way across with one row, start the next row just under the last.

If you need to take a break, put all your cut squares and triangles into plastic baggies and clean up your work station until you have time to start on your art again.

Continue gluing colored squares and triangles into your design until you are completely done. Let you mosaic dry completely and then display it proudly!
